 Commentary on Stl Rams

My Commentary on the St Louis Rams:

We have to remember that Professional football is a business and it is run by greedy owners who want nothing more than to increase the value of their franchise and pad their portfolio. In the end, they really don’t care who they lie to, insult, step on or swindle to accomplish their goal. In fact, they really don’t even care if they win on the field or not, because the simple math illustrates that they make a lot of money whether the team wins or loses.

Here are the facts. The salary cap for NFL teams is about $170 million. The Television revenue that the NFL collects is enormous. So much so, that EACH of the NFL owners (including Kroenke) receive around $252 million in television revenue per year. That means that after paying the prima don a athletes who play for them (many of which are criminals) they already show a positive balance sheet of around $82 million BEFORE they ever sell a single ticket to the game, before food concessions, before parking fees, before merchandise sales, and before any radio broadcast agreement that might be in place. You get the picture? They don’t have to put a quality team on the field, it doesn’t matter. They don’t have to win. But, if they do, the value of their franchise will increase even faster. Kroenke apparently doesn’t care about winning. He rarely even attended any of the Rams games. Look at his other sports franchises in Colorado. The Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche are both losing teams with poor attendance. Each of those teams are currently next-to-last in their divisions.

Consider the move by Kroenke. It was a well planned web of deception that was hatched long ago when he bought the controlling interest in the team. He never had any intention of staying in St Louis because he knew the value of the team would be higher in the glitzy area of Los Angeles. It didn’t matter that St Louis scrambled and put together a stadium proposal to meet the NFL guidelines and please Kroenke. He didn’t care, and ultimately the NFL didn’t care either. The league wanted a team in the 2nd largest television market because it would ultimately be more money for every owner. It’s all about greed.

The NFL used a weak excuse that the new stadium proposal would not work because the city of St Louis requested that the NFL kick in $100 million and the NFL said they wouldn’t do that. But then the league turned right around and offered $100 million each to both Oakland and San Diego if they would sign off on Kroenke’s mission to vacate St Louis and move to Inglewood. It was just a blatant fabrication by the NFL and Kroenke, all in the name of money. We all know that St Louis is a great sports town, despite what Kroenke says. Look at the success of the Cardinals and the Blues. They both have great support, but they also put a quality team in play each year. Perhaps Kroenke was also jealous of the Cardinal's success.

To the City of St. Louis: You escaped paying hundreds of millions you couldn't really afford, to a billionaire who really didn't need it.

Add to all of this to the ongoing evidence of more and more criminals being allowed to play while their transgressions are swept under the rug, as well as more and more players being diagnosed with brain damage after repeated concussions, and you get the sick feeling that this whole “business” is very corrupt. I like the comments by former St Louis Cardinals lineman, Dan Dierdorf, following the NFL announcement that Kroenke was moving the Rams to L.A. Dierdorf said: “This is no longer the same NFL that I played in.” Knowing what we now know about this group of greedy owners and the web of deception that the NFL operates under, it will be very hard to watch any more NFL football in the future, let alone flop down money to attend a game or buy a jersey. I have certainly checked out. Look up the definition of the word "cartel" and you will see that it accurately describes the operation of the NFL.

The solution: Ignore the NFL and root for your favorite college sports team. They aren’t going anywhere. The colleges will always be in the same place. In fact, root for the Cardinals or the Cubs, the Blues or the Blackhawks, they are likely not leaving for greedy green pastures either. As a Cardinals fan, it makes me appreciate the Bill DeWitt family even more. They are classy owners who actually care about the fans and give back to the community while always putting a competitive baseball team on the field.

The Bible has a lot to say about greed. Perhaps Mr Kroenke would be wise to read it.

“But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.” 1 Timothy 6:9.

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Matthew 6:24.

“For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord.” Psalm 10:3.

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5.
